One team was ready for the start of the of the USD vs. Claremont game, and one team was not.....unfortunately for the Toreros, the Cougars were the ones who came out strong, jumping to at one point a 6-1 lead. In addition to USD being outworked for most of the game, they also could not overcome 39 turnovers on the day; including players stepping out of bounds on the endline on three different occasions, while not being guarded.
USD was able to put two goals in the 4th quarter, and with momentum on their side and 6:00 minutes left on the clock, had closed the deficit to 7-6. Unfortunately for USD, we never got possession of the ball again in those six minutes. Claremont hung tough and for the most part ran out the clock. A great effort got Claremont the win, particularly by Max Sanford and Sam Bennett. |

The 2010 game schedule is just
starting to come together. Next year, the Toreros are going to have
one of the tougher schedules in the nation. We will be opening the
season with a game at Chapman University; and as of right now, we are
also committed
to play Cal Poly, UCSB, Claremont, U of A, ASU, Stanford, and of
course, SDSU. There will also be a couple of other nationally ranked
teams, from outside of our conference, coming out to San Diego to play
us on their Spring Break. Therefore, we anticipate having a schedule
of around 18 games, and at least half of the teams that we are going
to be playing next year should be ranked in the Top 25. As soon as
next season’s game
schedule is completely finalized, we will get it out to everyone and
up on the team’s website. I do not want it to seem that I am
complaining in any way, but hopefully next year we can excite a few
more of you to come see us play. We really do appreciate all of the
fan support that we receive, particularly for our home games.
Finally, we are going to be talking about a few of our fundraisers for
this coming season in the next few weeks. Right now we are planning on
using fundraisers that will not require added investments or
donations; things like eScript, or a day at a Rubios. If anyone has
any other ideas for similar types of fundraisers, please email me at:
coachdewan@usdlax.com.

The USD Men's Lacrosse team
finished the regular season with a winning record of
8-7, qualified for the SLC Div. 1 Play-offs, and
ultimately lost to Claremont 12 – 11 in Overtime of the
Quarter-Finals. We were huge underdogs in the game as
Claremont was a Nationally Ranked Top 20 team. It was an
incredibly exciting back and forth game; with Attackman
Bobby Enquist tying it up for us and forcing OT (with
his 5th goal of the night), with :18 seconds left in
regulation. Although the Claremont game was a
heartbreaker, the Toreros showed that they can respond
to a challenge and almost pull off the upset.
Several
Torero players received league recognition:
Ben Tilton, Mid-field, 2nd Team All-Conference
Bobby Enquist, Attack, Honorable Mention All-Conference
Tim Roe, Attack, Honorable Mention
All-Conference
Mikael Rosenberger, Defense, Honorable
Mention All-Conference" |

Once again it was the tale of two
halves for the Toreros of USD. In the first half, USD
was able to work through their offense, stay out of the
penalty box, and take advantage of the opportunities
that were presented to them; going into halftime with an
8-2 lead. In the second half
however, the Bruins coaching staff was able to make
several adjustments, and UCLA was able to completely
flip things around. The Bruins started to control the
face-off X and began to refocus on defense; holding down
USD's offense to one goal in the quarter. The score at
the end of the 3rd Quarter was 9-4.
In what proved to be an extremely
exciting 4th Quarter, UCLA absolutely started dominating
on offense. They would take advantage of every miscue
the Toreros made defensively, while possessing the ball
for almost the entire 4th quarter (USD would be limited
to only 2:20 of possession time, scoring only one goal
in this quarter as well).
The Bruins would not only climb
all the way back to tie the game, but would take the
lead 10-9, with just under 5 minutes remaining. At this
point both offenses unsuccessfully went back and forth
with each other. UCLA would call timeout with just under
:40 seconds remaining in the game to set up their play
to seal the victory. Fortunately for USD, #20 Will
Cudahy was able to strip the ball at the start of the
play out of the timeout, and ignited a fast break for
the Toreros that saw them tie the game at 10-10. Both
teams would fire wide in the final :30 seconds, sending
the game to overtime.
The teams would do little against
each other in the first overtime. In the second overtime
however, with just around a minute remaining, USD used a
quick substitution off of a timeout to set up a play.
#28 Carter McLennan was able to find line mate #14 Chris
Lonergan on the back side for the game winner.
USD was very lucky to leave
Westwood with a victory, as it was an extremely exciting
finish that obviously could have gone either way. Our
absolute best to the Bruins the rest of the way out and
we look forward to another exciting game against them
next year. For more information on the game please click

On the second day of their Bay Area trip, the Toreros
took on the Broncos of Santa Clara University.
Unfortunately an outstanding performance by USD Goalie,
#12 Des Bolia, was not enough to lift his teammates to a
win over the Broncos of Santa Clara.
Santa Clara overcame the elements and were able to find
their footing and establish themselves offensively.
Credit to the Santa Clara players and coaching staff, as
this was something that the Toreros themselves were
never able to do. Both defenses played well, but Santa
Clara won this game because they overwhelmingly won the
ground ball/number of possession battle. Final Score was
Santa Clara 12 - USD 5.
Our thanks to the Broncos, we hope to make this an
annual game between these two WCC and Jesuit programs.

USD traveled to the Bay Area to take on the University
of California, Berkeley. Cal was lead by an incredible
game from #12, Luke Langdon. Not only did it appear that
he never came off of the field, but he was dominating at
the face-off X.
USD was able to take advantage of the few possessions
that they did have in the first half, scoring on 4 of
their first 7 shots.
However, in the second half, Cal really showed how well
they are coached and how much their players understand
their game plan. With Langdon essentially making it
"winner's outs" at the face-off X in the 3rd quarter,
Cal's offense was smart enough to posses the ball for
extended periods of time. This caused the USD defense to
become completely worn down, and for its offense to
loose any kind of rhythm that it had started to
establish in the first half. Final score for the game
was Cal 14 - USD 6.
The Toreros offer their congrats to Cal on its victory,
their absolute best for the rest of the way, and hopes
to make this game between the two schools an annual
event. Click here for more info on the game: http://mcla.us/scores/games/6704/

11/3/08 The USD Men’s
Lacrosse team competed in the Best of the West
tournament this past weekend. The team was invited for
the first time to play in this “Fall Ball” tournament in
Las Vegas, NV. The Best of the West is a men’s
collegiate lacrosse tournament that has been in
existence for 11 years, and consistently features many
of the top programs in the country. This year the
tournament was made up of teams from all over, including
teams like BYU, Colorado St., Arizona St., U of A,
Oregon, Westminster, Cal Poly, Utah, as well as many
others.
The Toreros would do very well in their first showing in
Las Vegas. Friday night they played last season’s #4
team BYU. BYU had played Oregon the game before, and
they were able to jump out to a 3-1 halftime lead. USD
would begin to find its groove in the second half, but
unfortunately would come up a bit short, losing to the
Cougars 5-4.
On Saturday, the Toreros would play three games,
starting with UC Davis. Everyone on the team was able to
play, and it was a very close and fun, back and forth
type of game. Davis would pull out a one goal victory.
The next game was against Utah State. Once again the
Toreros were able to get everyone into the game. This
time however the team was able to come out on the
winning side of a close game, with a victory of 8-6.
The final game on Saturday was against last season’s #19
team, the University of Utah. In this game, the Toreros
set the tone by scoring in the first few seconds and
never looked back. A very well played game by all
members of the offense allowed for a victory over Utah,
by a final score of 11-4.
Following the last game, the team would then take a
short bus ride up the street and enjoy an extremely
competitive putting tournament at the Angel Park Golf
Course. Team Cudahy won the tournament and took home the
prize, after a dominating display of teamwork and
prowess on the putting greens.
Thank you to all of the parents and the fans that made
the trip to Las Vegas with the team. As always, your
support is tremendously appreciated.

The USD Men's Lacrosse
team enjoyed a great Alumni Weekend! The team was barely
able to pull out a hard fought 10-7 victory against its
Alumni. Afterwards, Torero lacrosse players of all years
enjoyed a wonderful banquet at the Alumni Center, and
cheered the induction of Thomas "T" Ladt and Tom "Lupus"
Palecek into the USD Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Our thanks
to our Alumni for making the trip, to our Alumni
Coordinator Dalton Bray, and our congrats to both T and
Lupus for their induction. We look forward to welcoming
all of the Alumni back for the "Battle for the Cross"
weekend, against LUM in the Spring."
